If your dues are current...

Some people, whose annual dues are current, have sent a letter similar to the following to successfully cancel their membership in a camping club.

No one told you 'at the time of the purchase' that you were expected to pay money in addition to your initiation fee, every year "until you die".

Such a scheme is offensive, abusive, and should be criminal.

To Whom It May Concern:

You are notified that:

  1. My initiation fee is paid in full;

  2. My dues/maintainence fees are current;

  3. I do not want to be a member of your club for reasons of my own;

  4. I will no longer use any of your facilities or services;

  5. I will not pay any future dues or maintenance fees.

Cancel my membershp immediately.

Any effort to get me to change or rescind this directive is unwelcome and will be reported to appropriate state and federal officials as harassment.

If you hear from them again - file a complaint immediately with the US FTC at the following web address as an unfair/deceptive practice that you want the FTC to stop. Be Brief - but thorough :

You should also file a complaint with the Attorneys General:

  1. in the state where the camping club is operating,
  2. where their home office is,
  3. and in your state.
